Items you will need :
1, Wax unless your planning on going for the land speed record all you need is a good universal wax.
2, A scraper again, nothing fancy here! Try to stick with perspex/plastic scrapers as they are less likely to gouge your base than metal ones, if you get clumsy.
3, Base cleaner, buy a fancy one from one of the main servicing equipment manufacturers. You only need it once in a blue moon, but using the right stuff can make the job of cleaning your base a lot easier, as well as being kinder to the structure of your base.
4, Scotchbrite pad, the green plastic scouring pads, the kind your mum uses to do the pans.
5, Iron Do not use the iron that you use for clothes! Either find an old one or go and buy one. The one I use cost £5.00 from Asda. if you can find an iron with a flat base ( no holes) use that. If not a modern steam iron is fine, but don't put water in it and don't use it set on steam.
6, Finishing brush, this is optional. It's purpose is to structure the wax left in your base. The scotchbrite pad does a fairly good job of this, but ideally the brush is better.
You will be able to buy everything you need from our shop
Right let's do it
For the purpose of this exercise, I'm going to assume a few things. Firstly that your base is clean (if it's not clean it, follow the instructions on your base cleaner). Secondly that your base has no major damage, gouges etc. (If it has take it to a professional).
Place your board base side up on a steady work surface.
Quickly brush of any dust.
Plug your iron in.
Set the temperature on the iron to somewhere around the wool setting, or slightly less than half temperature.
Get your wax and test it on the base of the iron. The iron should be hot enough to melt the wax, WITHOUT IT SMOKING.
Now hold the iron above your board with the point of the irons sole pointing at your base.
Start over one edge at the tip or the tail of your board, with the iron in one hand and the wax in the other.
Now touch the wax to the sole of the iron so that it melts and runs down the sole and drips from the iron onto the base right next to your steel edge.
Move up the length of the board all the way along the side of your board next to the edge.
Repeat for the other side. (Opposite edge).
Concentrate on putting a good amount of wax on your edges as these are the places where your base takes the most punishment.
Next get creative! Drip wax all over your base, I personally prefer lazy s's with a straight line down the middle. Do whatever you fancy, as long as there is enough wax on your base to spread around it doesn't matter.
Next place the iron on top of your base and move it in circular motions, melting the wax and spreading around, make sure you melt all the wax and cover the base evenly from edge to edge. DO NOT LEAVE THE IRON IN ONE SPOT FOR TOO LONG IT WILL BURN YOUR BASE.
Now go make a brew, watch telly or explore our site! Point is let the wax harden.
When the wax has hardened get your scraper and scrape it off. I Know this may not make sense, putting it on to take it off again, but your base is porous and has soaked the wax into it's structure. The wax that hasn't soaked in is excess.Try to scrape it off in long strokes from the nose towards the tail of your board. GET EVERY LAST BIT OF WAX OFF!!!
Next get the scotchbrite pad and buff the base in the same nose to tail fashion.
If you have a finishing brush use it now in the same manner as the scotchbrite pad.
