HELMETS ARE A NECESSITY.
Regular, Goofy, Heel edge, Toe Edge, Linked Turns, Side Slip: - If you don't understand these terms, then I don't think this page is for you. It is strongly advised that you learn all the basics of snow boarding ie controlling your speed and direction
Kicker: - A ramp (always check that the kicker is well constructed, and is easily capable of withstanding the forces you may place upon it). Check that the landing is steep enough. A good rule of thumb is that the landing should be as steep as the kicker face. The next thing to ensure is that it is possible to make the landing. It is highly unlikely that a kicker 1 foot high will give you correct trajectory to clear a 30 foot table! Also make sure taht the landing will not be overshot completely. If you’re riding in a park or on a dry slope, it's a pretty safe bet that everything is in order. Click here for diagram
Table: - The flat area between the edge of the kicker and the start of the landing
Knuckle: - The join of the end of the table and the start of the landing.
Switch: - This is riding backwards; if you're goofy then switch would be riding left foot first. If you’re regular then switch would be riding right foot first.
Back side (B/S):- If you’re goofy, B/S would be spinning anti-clockwise. Imagine the nose of your board is pointing to twelve o'clock on a clock face, B/S would mean spinning your board from twelve to eleven to ten to nine and so on.
If your regular B/S would be the opposite, spinning clockwise.
Front side (F/S):- This is the opposite of B/S. So goofy riders spin clockwise and regular riders spin anti-clockwise.
Straight Air: - Jumping in a straight line off a kicker
Pop: - At first it's a simple well balanced jump, as you progress you can start to incorporate the flex of your board, (also called pop). The latter technique is not too dissimilar from ollieing.
Straight air:-
Approach the kicker with enough speed to clear the table safely. If you're unsure, watch other riders who are hitting the kicker and gauge their speed. Set yourself up early, ensure you are lined up with the center of the kicker and traveling in a straight line. Make sure you are slightly on one edge, it can be either heel edge or toe edge, which ever feels most comfortable to you. As you ride up the kicker keep your weight evenly placed over both feet and centered above your board, at the edge of the kicker pop, raise your board beneath you and be sure to keep your shoulders and knees centered over your feet and board. Turn your head to look the way your are going and spot your landing, eyeball it all the way, just before you are going to land extend your legs to meet the landing, then let your knees compress a little to absorb the landing. Ride out like you never even knew you were airborne, or scream and shout with a big smile on your face........what ever makes you happy.
Straight air grabs:-
Exactly the same as a normal straight air. The only thing to consider is that your center of gravity will move as you try various grabs. Try just slapping your board in the correct place, depending on which grab you are attempting. As your confidence grows along with the understanding of how your center of gravity is affected, you can start to grab earlier and for longer!
Basic Grabs:-
Indie:- Grab the toe edge of your board between the bindings with your back hand.
Mute: - Grab the toe edge of your board between your bindings with your front hand.
Melon: - Grab the heel side edge of your board between the bindings with your front hand.
Method: - Grab the heel side edge of your board between the bindings with your front hand; pull the board up behind you.
Tail: - Grab the tail of your board with your rear hand.
Nose: - Grab the nose of your board with your front hand.
